William J Gordon, 97, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital. William was born on March 16, 1924 to William O. Gordon and Marion Needer Gordon in New Haven, CT.
A decorated WW II hero, he received a Presidential Citation with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters for his bombing missions over Europe. His missions flew from Benghazi, Lybia, and later in the war from Cerignola, Italy. A member of the 455th Bombgroup- 743rd Bomb Squadron, he was a ball turret gunner on Tee Pee Time Gal, a B24 Bomber. After his service, he was a Compositor at Olin Winchester, LLC. He also worked many years for Wilson H Lee, The New Haven Register, Courier Citizen and ADP. William was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, and his siblings Ronald and Muriel Recine.
William was survived by his two daughters, Mary (Jordan) Strosahl of Milford, Maureen (Michael) Burian of West Haven, and his three sons, William Jr (Irma) of Naugatuck, Joseph (Doreen deceased) of Milford, and Kevin (Carol) of St Petersburg, FL. He is also survived by 10 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Monday, May 3, 2021 at Keenan Funeral Home in West Haven, 5-7 pm. Funeral service, also at Keenan, will be Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 11am with internment immediately after at Oak Grove Cemetery in West Haven.
