Santiago Illas Jr.

Santiago (Papo) Illas Jr., 50 of West Haven, formerly of New Haven, died peacefully on April 16, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on December 1, 1970, a son of Santiago Illas sr. and Esther Pellot. 

Papo was a great competitor and advocate for racing. He was an even better person. His passion was his beloved 1983 Toyota Corolla who wore his racing name El Verdugo. He spent so much time working and perfecting his car and helping others improve their skills. He was one of the first competitors from the North East to compete in 3TC and nitro. Papo was also a supervisor at Clinton Nurseries where he worked since the age of 14. He was a kind and loving human being, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was loved by everyone and will be deeply missed. 

Papo is predeceased by his daughter Natalia Illas. In addition to his parents he is survived by his children Anthony Marrero, Crystal Perez, Christopher Illas, Matthew Illas, Nathan Illas of New Haven and Stephanie Illas of Clinton. His brothers and sisters Marisol Castro (Rigoberto Castro), Omayra Illas, Nelson Illas (Amy Illas), Nilsa Illas, Jose Illas, Lissette Illas, Emilio Illas ( Liz Illas), Omar Illas ( Yary Illas). His former spouse Marilyn Amador. Many loving nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. 

The Illas Pellot family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm Street, West Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 11AM. Burial will follow to Oak Grove Cemetery.
