Suddenly on Thursday, December 23, 2021, our mom, Phyllis Zullo (Dunkhase) 92 years young, went to eternal sleep to be home with our dad, the love of her life for over 62 years Alfred (Fred) Zullo. Born in New Haven on April 1, 1929, to the late George and Margaret Dunkhase and (Mary Heery) a lifelong West Haven resident, who will be missed by so many that mere words cannot describe.
Mom was a proud wife, mother and nonnie to, David Zullo, Steven & Debbie Zullo all from West Haven and her “special” granddaughter Amanda Zullo (Tyler Rice) of Ansonia. She was at her happiest being with her small but meaningful family who she was proud of in every way possible never missing an opportunity to tell them “I love you more”. Preceded by her two sisters, Barbara Saccu and Doris Gargano who she missed more every day. A beautiful, loving, caring homemaker, and being the best mom and nonnie possible was her proudest life accomplishment. Always making sure to celebrate dad’s birthday every year in her special way even after his passing in 2013. Never shy to tell you how she was feeling, mom had a heart of gold who was most content knowing her family was doing well. In her later years worrying about them became her hobby so that we would fear to tell her of the simplest of aliments that would worry her and lead to sleepless nights. A small lady who had more empathy and care than most, she loved unconditionally and simply asked for your love in return. A phone call by family or friends made her day and she found a way to let us know every detail of what at times were hours long conversations. The past weeks made her happy to decorate our Christmas tree and sing carols. She made sure to tell us not to take the tree down until she was ready to help now that “it was her job”. Mom was and is the glue that bound our family together and will be missed more than any words could ever explain. Some of her happiest times were on trips with lifelong friends, trips to Hawaii, Florida, and Niagara Falls just to name a few and renewing her marriage vows in 2001 to celebrate her 50th Anniversary with her “Freddy”. Sleep peaceful Mom you will walk beside each of us every day moreover in July as your pride and joy, Amanda walks down the aisle to start her life with your new grandson.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 25 Ash St. East Hartford Ct 06108.
