Peter E. Nilson

Peter Nilson, age 82, of Durham, CT passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Middlesex Hospital after a long illness.

Peter was born on April 7, 1937 in New Haven, CT and raised in Westport, CT. He attended Westport Public Schools and graduated from Staples High School in 1955. He married Maria Nilson in 1962 with whom he enjoyed 56 years of a happy and devoted marriage. When his children were young, Peter ran the Westport Fence Company.  Later he worked as a diesel mechanic for L.H. Gault & Sons, an oil, sand, and gravel company based in Westport.

Peter was a wonderful, loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather.  We were very fortunate to have him. He enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by his family for holidays, special occasions or picnics. Peter had many interests, which included mineral collecting, photography, clock repair, shellfishing, and hiking, among others.

Peter is survived by his wife, Maria Nilson of Durham, CT; his sons Carl and John Nilson (Michele), and their daughter Hanah of Northford, CT; his brother Ralph Nilson of Wilton, CT; and his sister Ruth Tisdale of Bolder, CO. He is pre-deceased by his parents Carl Gustave Nilson and Elizabeth Chafee Nilson of Westport, CT, and his adopted daughter Kristine Nilson.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 25th, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT.  Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery, 1530 Bronson Road in Fairfield, CT.
