Mary Theresa Harrington

September 16, 1921 ~ March 12, 2021 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Tribute

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Mary Belmont Harrington.  Mary passed away on March 12, 2021 peacefully at home with her family by her side.  Mary was born September 16, 1921 to Albert J. and Kathryn (McNully) Belmont.  She would have been 100 years old this year.

Mary’s life was quite the love story!  She met and married her high school sweetheart, Sterling W. Harrington.  When WWII broke out, Mary joined the WAC (Army) as a Secretary serving in the Carolinas and Florida.  Sterling was off to the Pacific to serve our country loyally for 5 years.  They were engaged on New Year’s Eve 1941 and married June 21, 1945.

Sterling joined the West Haven Police Dept. and retired as a Detective in the Youth Bureau.  Mary retired from the West Haven Veteran’s Administration as a Secretary after 30 years of service.

They began their married life in West Shore on Lake Street in West Haven and raised their daughter Gayle.  They enjoyed many years in their shoreline home and especially loved being by the beach and their newly acquired hobby of boating.

After Sterling’s passing of a long illness in 1981, Mary moved to Boynton Beach, Florida for 15 years.  She enjoyed spending time with family at their Vermont home.

Mary leaves her daughter Gayle (Richard) Morton of West Haven, grandchildren Kristen (Bill) Stoner of Northford, Todd Morton of West Haven and Michael Morton of South Boston.  Mary was predeceased by her parents, brothers Edmund, Albert J., Arthur and sister Nancy Landino.

Mary was a member of the McCauley Guild Mothers Club of Lauralton Hall in Milford and the Knights of Columbus Club in West Haven.  She will be fondly remembered by all that knew her for her kindness, gentleness, caring and loving ways.  Always a smile on her face and a flair for fashion.

Special thanks for the caregivers of CT Hospice in Branford for the guiding the family through a difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting a donation be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 in Mary Harrington’s name.
