John Roger Zyde, age 81, long time West Haven CT resident died peacefully in the early morning of Thursday, December 6, 2018 after a fierce battle with cancer. His beloved wife and best friend Marie (Apuzzo) Zyde of 60 years was by his side in the comfort of his home. “Roger” was born in New Haven in 1937 to the late John Paul and Henrietta Blanchard Zyde.
He is survived by loving daughters Robyn (Steve) Staurovsky, Patty (Gary) Gallipoli and Barbie (Dave) Chase. He was predeceased by cherished daughter Marisa (David) Matrisciano. He was grandfather to Stephen (Crystal) Staurovsky and Nicholas Staurovsky, David and John Matrisciano, Jennifer and Jacob Kelleher, and Troy Gallipoli. This year he became great grandfather to Logan Staurovsky. He also leaves loving sister Barbara Manning. He was predeceased by half brother Robert Zide. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters /brother in-laws, and friends in FL as well as CT.
He worked for Metro North and Amtrack Railroads for over 30 years. He served in the Army National Guard Reserves.
Roger had a competitive spirit and played cards, pool and golf. He loved animals, music and playing harmonica. He was a boater, water-skier and ballroom & square dancer. He loved to watch football and baseball rooting for Mets, Yanks, Red Sox, Patriots and Giants. He enjoyed his retirement years traveling with his best friend and wife Marie.
He will be remembered by his family and friends as the spicy ingredient to every memorable gathering.
