Joan C. Patterson

Joan (Carney) Patterson, 82 of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully on September 3, 2017 at home, surrounded by her loving family.  She was the wife of Douglas K. ("Don") Patterson.

Born in Boston, MA on November 15, 1934 to the late Joseph Edward Carney and Ruth (Harvey) Clark.  She was raised by her mother and step-father Verdun F. Clark, Sr.  She was the retired bookkeeper for Patterson Plumbing Company.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Old Saybrook.  She enjoyed gardening, music, reading, bird watching and loved to travel. She enjoyed being part of the "Motley Crew", a group of friends for over 60 years.

She married Douglas ("Don") on December 12, 1953 and shared 63 years together and had 3 children together, Valerie (The Reverend Stanley) Cook of Westbrook, Douglas M. Patterson and Tracy E. Patterson, both of Old Saybrook.  Also survived by grandchildren Chelsea and Justin Norton, and Ross and Olivia Patterson.  Also surviving are her brothers Dennis, Dale, Timothy and Patrick Carney and sister-in-laws Catherine "Toby" McEwen and Carole Clark.  She is predeceased by her brother Verdun F. Clark Jr, and sisters Maureen LaPlace and Susan Baxter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 366 Main Street, Old Saybrook.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joan's name may be made to Warm The Children, P.O. Box 603, Essex, CT 06426-0603 or if more convenient, go to the donations tab on their website www.warmthechildren.org , and select Old Saybrook as the destination.
