Gilbert Hernandez

Gilbert Hernandez, 81, peacefully went to be with the Lord surrounded by family on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.  Gilbert was born on January 30, 1941 in Manhattan, NY.  Gilbert served in the US Navy on a Lug 2 Destroyer, and it was there that he earned his nickname “Hershey”.

In his younger years he made a living as a Mechanic at Con Ed.  Gilbert was a man of faith and served the Lord alongside his beloved wife of 53 years, Anna.  Gilbert loved watching Westerns, collected Hess trucks and vintage cars, was well known for his overalls with pens in the pockets, and steel-toe boots.  Not a day went by that he wasn’t faithfully watching Jimmy Swaggart ministries and worshiping with their choir.

Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife Anna, his daughters Emmy Hernandez-Rivera (Louie), Deborah Hernandez, and Rebekah Hernandez.  Grandchildren:  Jessica Sanchez (Tony), Freddie Melendez (Soraida), Jacqueline Cuadrado (David), Rey Gilbert Hernandez, Phillip & Joshua Rao.  Great-grandchildren:  Benny Rivera Jr., Amiyalee & Jacob Melendez, Jayleeanna & Arabella Sanchez, Seth & Mila Cuadrado. 

Gilbert will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  A man of few words, yet full of discernment and wisdom.  His infectious smile and peaceable spirit will forever be etched in our hearts.
