Douglas E. Cassie

Old Saybrook – Douglas E. Cassie, 92, of Old Saybrook, passed away after a short illness, on January 7, 2021. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of the late John and Marion (Carlson) Cassie. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Wright) Cassie and a brother, Alan Cassie. Surviving Douglas are two sisters, Shirley Morash of Concord, NH and Beverley Poole of Dedham, MA. Doug will now join Barbara as they continue their 70 years of marriage. Doug will be sadly missed by his children, Susan Cassie (Jeff) of Bernardston, MA; Janet Downie (Peter) of Deep River, CT; and Robert Cassie (Mary Jane) of Feeding Hills, MA. Additionally, he will be forever in the hearts of his 6 grandchildren, Talia, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Cameron, Matthew and Larisa. Also missing Doug are his 6 great-grandchildren, Mya, Bryce, Harper, Emily, Jaxson and Grant. A 1946 graduate of Dedham High, Doug attended Boston Architectural Center, University of Pittsburgh and Mitchell College. Doug’s career included work with Stone & Webster, Westinghouse and ultimately Electric Boat in Groton, CT retiring in 1991 as a nuclear design piping supervisor. After marrying Barbara in 1950, they moved to Pittsburgh, PA where Doug worked on the initial design of the USS Nautilus reactor plant, then on to Idaho Falls, ID to test the reactor. Eventually, Doug made one final move back to Connecticut to work on the nuclear power plant for all later classes of submarines until retirement. Over the years, Doug and his wife Barbara traveled extensively throughout all the lower 48 states and especially loved their trips ‘out West’. These trips provided wonderful memories which sustained them both in later years. Doug was a proud 64-year member of the Barbershop Harmony Society /SPEBSQSA which provided him amazing opportunities to sing for many audiences near and far. Doug was proud to be invited with his quartet, the Top Hats, to entertain US troops on 2 USO tours; 1966 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and 1970 in Japan, Guam and the Philippines. Beyond singing, Doug’s hobbies included fishing, oriental landscaping and model railroading. Doug chose Old Saybrook, CT to raise a family with Barbara. Together, they nurtured a proud family who still value the fond memories of growing up in ‘Saybrook’ even today. Donations may be made in his memory to Barbershop Harmony Society. A celebration of life will be held at a future date, when family and friends may gather responsibly.
