Susan P Wood

Susan Penelope (Penny) Wood, 68, of East Haven passed away on February 15, 2017 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, following a long illness. She was the beloved wife of Brian Wood. She was born in New Haven on October 1, 1948 to Dora Belbusti and Francis Warren Spencer.

After graduating from St. Mary’s High School and the University of New Haven, Penny spent most of her adult life in banking, where she worked as an accountant. While Penny never had children of her own, she adopted many less fortunate families at Christmas, for Thanksgiving dinners, and would buy school supplies and backpacks for needy children in the New Haven school system. Penny was an avid reader who loved to shop due to a keen sense of fashion, color, and style.  Her fashion sense also led her to volunteer at the East Haven Historical Society where she dated and typed clothing artifacts.  Another of Penny’s interests was lighthouses and her extensive collection ranged from sweatshirts to plates and photographs as her travels took her to many beacons throughout New England. 

Penny loved her family and she will be very sadly missed.  In addition to her husband of thirty years, she is survived by a sister, Candace S. (Mel) Poole of Thurmont, MD; and a brother, Jeffrey P. Spencer of East Haven. Penny also leaves behind cousins Mary (Louis) Speringo, of East Haven and David (Tracy) Belbusti of West Haven, as well as a nephew, Joshua (Katy) Poole of North Carolina, and nieces Lauren E. Poole of Texas, and Jennifer L. Spencer of East Haven.

Family and friends may visit the Keenan Funeral Home, 330 Notch Hill Road in North Branford on Tuesday, February 28 from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 1 at 10am with burial to follow at All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Avenue in North Haven.
