Luigia Proto

Luigia “Gina” (Carchia) Proto, 96, beloved wife of the late Antonio Proto, passed away on Monday July 10, 2017 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.  She was born in Avellino Italy on October 20, 1920 to the late Otto and Carmela (Formatto) Carchia.

Gina was a longtime resident of West Haven after marrying her sweetheart in 1953 and moving to the United States.  Gina resided in New Jersey for a short time and owned and operated her own small corner market.  She was later employed as a cook for Chick’s Drive-In in West Haven for over 20 years. Gina was a member of the committee for the feast of St. Mary Magdalene for many years and was a parishioner of Our Lady of Victory Church. 

She is survived by her two children; Teresa Proto Hunnicutt and Pasquale (Karen) Proto.  She is also survived by her three brothers; Claudio, Otto, and Carlo, as well as six grandchildren, one great grandchild, Edward Hunnicutt Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was predeceased by her three brothers and two sisters. 

Gina will be remembered for her love for her family, the shoreline and her beloved dog Fido.  Family and friends may gather at the Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm St. West Haven, on Wednesday July 12, from 4-7pm.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11am on Thursday July 13, at Our Lady of Victory Church, 620 Jones Hill Rd. West Haven.  Everyone is asked to gather directly at church the morning of Mass.  Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. 

Gina’s family requests that instead of sending a floral tribute, you make a donation to the Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford, 06405 to thank them for the generosity and kindness given to her during her final days of life.
