Sidney S. Holt

WEST HAVEN ~ Sidney Shewbrooks Holt, 86, of West Haven, loving husband of the late Dorothy Sutton Holt, beloved father, grandfather, and companion, died Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Veterans Medical Center in West Haven.  Born in West Haven, June 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Arthur and Marsha Shewbrooks Holt.  Sidney grew up on California Street in West Haven.  His Aunt Maude and Uncle Boyd Henry helped raise him, and he enjoyed going to Savin Rock with Friends Donald Karn and Kenny Greenspun.  He enjoyed swimming, sailing, roller-skating, dancing, and playing his clarinet.  In 1945 he graduated from West Haven High School and entered the U.S. Navy.  He trained on the Aircraft Carrier, Kearsarge, and was honorably discharged in 1946.  He began a 33 year career with United Illuminating as an accountant in 1953, and married Dorothy Louise Sutton at St. Lawrence Church, in September of that year.  They began their family and Sidney began to earn his degree in business administration at Quinnipiac University.  Family vacations were often enjoyed in Florida, Canada, and camping and clamming in Rhode Island.  His retirement from the U. I. Co. gave him free time to visit friends and family, go to Jazz concerts, and sail his boat, something he always loved.  Sidney was predeceased by his wife Dorothy on June 8, 1994.  He leaves behind his children, Deborah Cusack, of Winston, Oregon, James Holt, of West Haven; Susan Dumont, of North Haven, and John Holt, of West Haven; five grandchildren, Danielle Dumont Maresca, Lindsay Dumont, Rowan Dumont, Christopher Holt, and Michael Cusack, and his companion of many years, Evelyn Cooper.  He was also a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit.  The funeral will be from the Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm Street, West Haven, Tuesday morning at 10:30, followed by a funeral Mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Church Street, West Haven, at 11:00.  Burial with Military Honors will be in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.  Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the Mass from 8:30 to 10:30.  Gifts in Sidney’s memory may be directed to the West Haven Animal Shelter, 7 Collis Street, West Haven, CT. 06516.  Condolences may be expressed online at www.keenanfuneralhome.com
